I had quit the scare with my boston terrier, Precious. I got Precious when she was 6 weeks old and have grown a strong connection with her.
Ever since she was little her nose was always making a "snorting" noise. I always made jokes and called her a little pig and my dad would call her snorty. I also noticed that when she got excited she would always drink a lot of water and end up regurgitating. When I took her in for her first shots I asked the vet if it was normal and she said she didn't really know, and as long as there wasn't any strange yellow liquids coming out of her nose that they wouldnt worry about it. I wasnt satisfied with that answer and wanted to get a second opion.
So I went to another vet and he examined her. He said it was nothing to worry about. She had a nasal devated septum. Which mean, her nose was pushed back a little farther then most boston terriers. The only advice he gave was to keep her food and water higher up the water wasnt going up her nose and it would stop her from regurgitating. That all made sense so I thought nothing more of it.
A couple weeks later I woke up and I noticed she wasnt laying next to me. She ALWAYS sleeps with me. So I get out of bed worried, looking for her. She was sitting up in her kennel. I looked in at her, but she didnt come out to greet me. Which is not normal for her. She is always so excited to see people. So I go to grab her out of her kennel and notice there is throw up hanging out of her mouth. I called my mom and told her get to my house soon because something was wrong with Precious.
When my mom got to my place Precious tried walking over to my mom, but was very weak and fell over. My mom, "we got to get her to the vet fast!"
So we took her to a totally different vet. We told them her history and they got started looking at her. They took some x rays of her chest and thats when the bad news came. Both of her lungs had liquid in them and they thought her heart looked bigger then it was supposed to. One of the vets had Precious on oxygen and other starting giving me my options.
They did not have the capability to keep Precious there and try to figure out exactly what was wrong with her. They thought it was phenomonia or her heart. So she said we could send her to des moines, which would end up costing $400-$600, or Iowa State, which would end up costing $500-$800. And she asked what I wanted to do. I broke down in tears. I love my dog, but that is so much money and I didnt have that money just to throw away.
So a few hours later we arrive at Iowa State. It is just like a normal hospital, dogs going in out. They took Precious as an emergency patient. They put her on oxygen right away and drew her blood to figure out where to start. We were in the waiting room for about 2 hours they already had her bill racked up to $400 and they had no payment plan! I told the vet that i couldnt go over $1000, so do as much as she could and when it was getting to reach the amount to call me and i would figure out where to go from there. Of course they werent happy with that. But if i would have let them I swear my bill would have been $8000 in no time.
She spent 2 nights down there. They treated her for aspiration phenomonia, which was caused by her regurgating and it going down in her lungs.
She is home and on 3 different kinds of medicine and on a treatment 4 times a day. She is doing so much better!
